RE-ENVISIONING ANDARKILLA SHAHI JAME MOSQUE

Andarkilla, Chittagong, 2025

Andarkilla is one of the most vibrant and bustling areas in Chattogram today. It is a diverse neighborhood characterized by mixed-use and commercial buildings, including bookshops, printing presses, tailoring and fabric stores, banks, and more. The narrow streets, lively marketplaces, and historic structures create a dynamic and intimate urban atmosphere where religious life seamlessly intertwines with everyday urban activities. The architectural vision for the Andarkilla Shahi Jame Mosque aims to enhance a multifunctional religious and cultural hub that merges history with modernity while fostering sustainability and community engagement. The project seeks to establish a dynamic urban sanctuary where spiritual devotion, education, and social interaction coexist harmoniously. The design redefines architectural spaces by seamlessly integrating tradition and modernity, respecting both the built and natural environment.

By integrating traditional Mughal architectural elements with contemporary design strategies, the project will emphasize symmetry, spatial hierarchy, and material authenticity while incorporating modern advancements in sustainability and functionality. Also, the collective memory of the people of Chattogram towards the mosque will be reflected in the design. The design will reflect the mosque’s historical significance while adapting to present and future needs.
